Week 2: Content planning, Brainstorm, Research
As mentioned in the previous post, I've chose to do AR mobile app. After showing Louise my learning plan which wasn't very satisfying, and after some guidance from her, I finally had an idea for the content and managed to fix my learning plan. Nice.
For the past two weeks I was actually very lost about what I can use as the main content. Retail? Culture? But after looking at the references Louise provided, I picked some of the more relevant ones, and also some that I personally liked, such as the Starbucks and Adidas AR apps. Then from there I started another round of brainstorming. My initial idea was retail, and I decided to branch out from there. I also put myself in the customers' shoes, thinking of what are the struggles I face usually when doing shopping. While brainstorming and also searching for some articles regarding AR in retail, "fragrance" was mentioned in one of the articles. I personally is a big fan of fragrance so ideas came to me not long later.
First off, from a consumer's perspective, I find it difficult to "imagine" or "visualize" the smell or the atmosphere of fragrances. I usually have to go through a long list of products of a certain brand, then go to another website to check the notes of some of the fragrances I am interested in, then decide if I wanna go to the store and test or not. It is a very long and sometimes, annoying process just to kind of get an idea of how the fragrances are going to smell like.
A brief explanation: initially I thought that for my AR app, I can make a catalog, or even packaging for the user to scan using the app, then flowers or environments will appear on screen to portray or present the notes and the overall "feeling" of the fragrances. This is more of an informative content. Then I later tried to develop the idea a bit more.
The more developed idea is that user can scan the catalog or packaging, then the animated image can be interactive or generative, so the outcome will be something that the users can share the social media platforms. This way, it can not only attract consumer's attention, the shared posts can also reach more potential customers, helping the brand achieve a certain level of publicity.
Throughout the brainstorming session, I tried to be creative but at the same time also constantly considered if it is really doable or not. Be it time wise, cost wise and all that. It is true that I want to achieve something nice, something creative but I couldn't ignore the fact that there are still limits to certain things. After much consideration I think my current idea is pretty doable.
Other than that, I also did some case studies about fragrances and AR. There are some other brands that did AR but from what I managed to find, most of them are just filters or in-store VR. I believe my artifact is realistically reachable and doable, with enough access to materials needed. Next, I'll wait for more feedback and guidance from lecturer the proceed to the next step.
