Sketches/Planning

Image
After the consultation, I will now need to organise my remaining tasks for better execution.  First off is the marker design, instead of designing a new icon or marker, it is recommended to use the original label. A QR code will be needed to download the app so in terms of label and marker, I only need to use the original ones and generate a QR code later. Next is the 3D assets. I have two choices in terms of UI, one is the florals surrounding the bottle when detected, and another one is from the back of the bottle. Experiment will be needed to decide which is better. As of the art style for the 3D objects, it's recommended that I do something simple and not too complicated. There's no need for it to be too complicated so it's less time consuming. I can also play around with the lighting and composition to further enhance it without having to do anything to realistic for the 3D objects. Next is the communication part, including the pages and flow of the app. I have decided ...

Marker/Icon Design

Image
After the submission for Assignment 1 on week 6, I further moved on with the marker design, which was surprisingly more challenging than I had thought. Especially after the sharing by Chia Yeh, I had to put a lot of things into consideration when designing the marker icons so I can ensure that they are not only easy to scan but also recognizable at first glance. I have chose to do at least 3 different markers for 3 different scents, which I fortunately have at home. While my sister has Lime Basil and Mandarin , English Pear and Freesia , and Wood Sage and Sea Salt, I personally own English Oak and Hazelnut , and Earl Grey and Cucumber. With these existing bottles, I can easier measure the size required for the markers and roughly have an idea of where to place them. The design process first started with rough sketches on paper, with the initial idea of using minimalist and line art style to match Jo Malone's elegant image. The size also has to be small in order to fit their 30ml bo...

Week 5: Refining Proposal

Image
After the consultation on week 4, I had to refine my proposal alongside the learning plan and project management chart which is due next week. Louise showed us examples of how to write project background, purpose and all that jazz after week 4's consultations. They were pretty helpful so I actually managed to refine and write them accordingly. I also had to plan out my user flow, a sketch of what is going to happen when the users engage with the AR app. Louise also showed me another case study on AR by Shazam and the gin brand, Bombay Sapphire. (Not gonna lie I felt so weird seeing the gin on screen because we have one laying at home for YEARS) To summaries, users can scan the complimentary little tag that comes with the bottle, then they will see animation of flowers coming out of the label, also users will have access to the videos of different cocktail recipes utilizing this gorgeous looking liquor while different genres of music will play according to the different recipes. (Al...

Week 4: Proposal

We are supposed to show our Shifter's Project proposal, at this stage the planning is already near 70% done I reckon? It's hard to define but planning definitely plays an important role so it's going to take quite some time.  While writing the proposal, we had to write the project background, purpose, target audience analysis, concept and idea, content planning and a lot of other details. I honestly don't understand what's the project background but I still tried to write it and later seek for improvements after receiving feedback. The most interesting part I find is doing case studies research, I did them mainly based on the fragrance industry (which isn't enough) and found some similar projects. First is COTY's VR experience: shoppers will visit the counter,  first pick up one of seven scent stones, which each represent a unique olfactive territory, before being propelled into an immersive universe which brings the specific olfactive area to life through t...

Week 3: Endless Research and Planning

Image
I have decided that this blog is where I throw in all my stuffs. Ideas, plans and all that. Because my brain can't take it anymore. Anyhow, after the second learning plan discussion, I've written down some notes about what I should refine in my learning plan. Then I proceeded to look at tutorials and watched more videos on how to make an AR app to sort out the brief structure of my work flow which looks like this now: 1. Design  catalog  / packaging for the target image. 2. Create 3D objects (flowers/fruits) in C4D . 3. Import objects and required items into Unity . 4. Generate target images on Vuforia . 5. Develop AR app on Unity : place objects, create buttons, write C# script etc.. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCOLdX1JMo4) So that was on the technical stuffs. Other than that, I researched about fragrance brands and marketing strategies to refresh my memories, this time I found more articles and examples that I've never seen last week. Week 2.5(?): More Research? (´・ᴗ・ ` )

Image
First off, I watched some videos of how to make AR apps to have the basic understandings of the making process. Even though the content is still unconfirmed, I thought it will be good to at least start somewhere. Secondly, I also did some research on fragrance brands marketing strategies, reading up on how they promote their products, as well as researching about consumer needs in the perfume industry. Frankly speaking, I wasn't expecting to see any "interesting" articles about it because... marketing articles usually sound really d u l l and b o r i n g but thank all gods I managed to come across some nice ones and they really did open my eyesight. Week 2: Content planning, Brainstorm, Research

Image
As mentioned in the previous post, I've chose to do AR mobile app. After showing Louise my learning plan which wasn't very satisfying, and after some guidance from her, I finally had an idea for the content and managed to fix my learning plan. Nice. For the past two weeks I was actually very lost about what I can use as the main content. Retail? Culture? But after looking at the references Louise provided, I picked some of the more relevant ones, and also some that I personally liked, such as the Starbucks and Adidas AR apps. Then from there I started another round of brainstorming. My initial idea was retail, and I decided to branch out from there. I also put myself in the customers' shoes, thinking of what are the struggles I face usually when doing shopping. While brainstorming and also searching for some articles regarding AR in retail, "fragrance" was mentioned in one of the articles. I personally is a big fan of fragrance so ideas came to me not long later. ...
